Every time I describe a city I say something about Venice

The “Images of Memory” stele explores the concept of “Heim- und Fernweh”, a German expression for “homesickness” and “nostalgia for travel”. The project celebrates the friendship and cultural relations between Italy and Kazakhstan, seven hundred years after the death of Marco Polo (1324-2024) and on the occasion of the Italian Contemporary Art Day, 2024. The work expresses the dualism between the insatiable desire to explore lands and seas beyond borders, collecting stamps in one’s passport, and the need to feel anchored in one’s homeland, here represented by battuto veneziano, the traditional flooring of northern Italy, known as terrazzo alla veneziana, made of marble grit and terracotta.

With the support of the Italian Cultural Institute of Almaty and the Italian Embassy in Kazakhstan, technical sponsor Graniti Fiandre SPA.
